The Sign Language Interpreter – Skills Evaluation (SLI-SE) is a professional evaluation designed to identify your current interpreting skill level while providing meaningful direction for continued growth.

Candidates receive an overall SLI-SE level based on the skills demonstrated:

Advanced Level Interpreting Skills
Entry Level Interpreting Skills
Developing Interpreting Skills
Conversational Language Skills

Candidates who achieve Entry Level or Advanced Level Interpreting Skills receive an SLI-SE certificate recognizing their demonstrated level.

More Than a Level

Every candidate receives individualized feedback examining key areas of interpreting performance. Your results identify demonstrated strengths as well as specific areas where focused development may help you progress.

Preparing for the EIPA, NIC, BEI, or another professional evaluation? Your SLI-SE feedback can help you identify where to focus your preparation and make your practice more purposeful.

Whether you’re preparing for certification, working toward a higher skill level, or simply want an independent professional evaluation of your interpreting skills, the SLI-SE gives you both recognition of where you are and direction for where to go next.

How It Works

Choose the SLI-SE evaluation that best reflects your interpreting setting, such as K–12 educational interpreting. You’ll receive instructions for completing and submitting your interpreting sample for evaluation.

Your work is reviewed by qualified SLI-SE evaluators using established evaluation criteria across key areas of interpreting performance. You’ll receive your SLI-SE skill level and individualized evaluator feedback within three weeks.

Candidates who demonstrate Entry Level or Advanced Level Interpreting Skills receive an SLI-SE certificate recognizing the level achieved.
